About Horizons

Horizons is a serious attempt to identify the important changes that the world will confront over the next ten years.

What will be the greatest business challenges facing the planet over the next decade, who will solve them, and how? Huge questions - and ones that Horizons will be tackling.

The agenda was set by some of the world's leading experts in their fields, ranging from finance to chemistry to architecture. In a fascinating debate chaired by presenter Adam Shaw, our experts proposed 20 themes they thought would dominate the world in the next decade. You can watch that debate here on the website.

Using that list of themes as its guide, Horizons embarked on a six-month tour of the world, plunging into areas where those changes have begun to take place, and uncovering what the rest of the world can learn from those countries leading the reform.

Horizons will explore the soaring global population, which will have increased 10% by the year 2020. It will visit areas where population density influences crucial global issues such as safe living and food supply. Horizons will address the need for better transport systems, and it will examine how the need to reduce pollution is encouraging innovators to reduce the carbon footprint our lifestyle creates. It will look at food and land security, ranging from some of the world’s driest places with inadequate water, to countries where rising sea levels result in excessive water.

In each programme Horizons will investigate a country that is not only experiencing some of the problems highlighted by our experts, but is also tackling those problems in novel and innovative ways that could provide a model for other countries to follow.

Horizons is a safari of ideas—a world expedition during which you will not only learn the problems confronted by global communities, but where you will also discover the businesses working at the cutting edge of technology to provide the solutions we need for the future.

The series runs from Friday 6th May 2011, with episodes aired weekly at the following times:

Fridays at 11.30pm GMT
Saturdays at 2.30am GMT and 3.30pm GMT
Sundays at 9.30am GMT and 9.30pm GMT
