《建築的倫理功能》一書的作者是(美國)卡斯騰·哈里斯、譯者為申嘉。本書出自二十多年前作者與肯特·布魯默(Kent Bloomer)的一些談話，他們談到了建築，談到了耶魯大學的建築學本科生修科目以及建築學教育。在談話中，肯特·布魯默邀作者向他正在客串編輯的一期《建築教育》雜誌投稿。於是作者寫一篇簡要的、提綱挈領式的短文，標題已然是“建築的倫理功能”(《建築教育》雜誌，合訂本29，1975年第1期第14頁)。十年後作者擴充了該文的內容，但它仍然簡短，作者冠之以同一標題(發表在Pescriptions上，編輯為Don Ihde和Hugh J.Silverman[奧爾巴尼：SUNY出版社，1985年]，第129 ～140頁)。現在作者是第三次選用這個標題，因為本書表明，該標題所提出的問題對作者而言一直是個挑戰，其中“倫理的(ethical)”一詞據作者理解與希臘語ethos(精神特質)更相關，而不是我們通常所指的“ethics(倫理、道德)”，如我們談到“商業道德”或“醫德”時的那種意思：本書中所稱的architectual ethics完全不是“建築道德”的意思。

Developing Giedion¹s claim that contemporary architecture's maintask is to interpret a way of life valid for our time, philosopher Karsten Harries answers thatarchitecture should serve a common ethos. But if architecture is to meet that task, it first has tofree itself from the dominant formalist approach, and get beyond the notion that its purpose is toproduce endless variations of the decorated shed.In a series of cogent and balanced arguments,Harries questions the premises on which architects and theorists have long relied -- premises whichhave contributed to architecture's current identity crisis and marginalization. He first criticizesthe aesthetic approach, focusing on the problems of decoration and ornament. He then turns to thelanguage of architecture. If the main task of architecture is indeed interpretation, in just whatsense can it be said to speak, and what should it be speaking about? Expanding upon suggestions madeby Martin Heidegger, Harries also considers the relationship of building to the idea and meaning ofdwelling.Architecture, Harries observes, has a responsibility to community; but its ethical functionis inevitably also political, He concludes by examining these seemingly paradoxicalfunctions.
