Alice's Adventures in Wonderland -- Chapter XII

Alice looked at the jury-box, and saw that, in her haste, she had put the Lizard .... and find a pleasure in all their simple joys, remembering her own child-life, and ...
Lastly, she pictured to herself how this same little sister of hers would, in the after-time, be herself a grown woman; and how she would keep, through all her riper years, the simple and loving heart of her childhood: and how she would gather about her other little children, and make their eyes bright and eager with many a strange tale, perhaps even with the dream of Wonderland of long ago: and how she would feel with all their simple sorrows, and find a pleasure in all their simple joys, remembering her own child-life, and the happy summer days.
THE END
Sir John Tenniel, who illustrated the first edition of Alice in Wonderland, was born #onthisday in 1820. ‘Alice's Adventures in Wonderland’ began as an impromptu story told by Charles Dodgson (who used the pen name Lewis Carrol), a mathematics lecturer at Oxford University, to the daughters of a colleague (Alice, Lorina and Edith Liddell) while on a boating trip. Dodgson expanded his story into book form, published in 1865. Tenniel was chosen to illustrate this first edition. His illustrations were engraved on wood by the Dalziel Brothers, who ran the most important wood-engraving workshop of the time http://ow.ly/Ywaqn
