Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians By Pierre Clastres

這兩天都碰到人間異/譯書"出土"。這本書歷史更悠久,百年*。
Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians By Pierre Clastres 的英譯者的"Translator's Note "說與這本作者的交往Pierre Clastres (1934-1979) ,他的譯稿在兩家小出版社被丟,當時Paul Auster得無法留複印本 (窮困故事可參考梁永安翻譯他的回憶錄 Hand To Mouth)....
20幾年後,Paul Auster是美國名小說家,有次在新書巡迴會,有個一面之緣的朋友交給他Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians 影印稿,問他怎回事,他5美金在舊書攤買到的。.....
Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians By Pierre Clastres ,1998年由紐約的Zone出版 (MIT Press經銷Now available for the first time in English in a beautiful translation by the novelist Paul Auster,),2000再刷。我從台大圖書館自動化倉儲借出,上頭寫"某讀者贈"。

Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians

Pierre Clastres
Zone Books, 2000 - 349 ページ

Pierre Clastres (1934-1979) was one of the most respected political anthropologists of our time. Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians is an account of his first fieldwork in the early 1960s--an encounter with a small, unique, and now vanished Paraguayan tribe. From "Birth" to "The End," Clastres follows the Guayakis in their everyday lives, determined to record every detail of their history, ritual, myths, and culture in order to answer the many questions prompted by his personal experiences. Now available for the first time in English in a beautiful translation by the novelist Paul Auster, Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians will alter radically not only the Western academic conventions in which other cultures are thought but also the discipline of political anthropology itself.

The late French anthropologist Pierre Clastres describes in novelistic detail his encounter with a now vanished Paraguayan tribe.

CHRONICLE OF THE GUAYAKI INDIANS

In an account that is both living history and historical document, a now-vanished tribe of Paraguayan Indians is described as it lives out its last few years of existence. This document was unearthed some 20 years after novelist Auster translated it from the French, through a serendipitous encounter with one of his fans who had purchased a bound galley from a used bookstore. Clastres, who died before the translation was to have been published, lived with this tribe for two years in 1963 and 1964 in a compound that was under the protection of a white Paraguayan. The arrangement for the Indians was through necessity; their numbers had diminished from constant harassment by white settlers...
