“It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.”
"Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth."
“To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's.”

Fyodor Dostoevsky was sentenced to death for his involvement in an underground ring. Why was the sentence commuted to four years in prison? Writer Fyodor Dostoevsky was one of a group of 35 members of the Petrashevsky Circle, a Russian literary discussion group largely opposed to Russian serfdom and the tsarist autocracy. Czar Nicholas I, considering groups like this subversive and potentially damaging to his reign, put the prisoners through a symbolic ritual of execution. He had the prisoners sentenced to death, and then only minutes before the sentence was to be carried out, the czar commuted it, supposedly showing mercy on the condemned men. Dostoevky ended up serving four years at hard labor in a Siberian prison and another four years in enforced service in the Russian army. His books, including Notes from the Underground, Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov explore sin, morality and redemption. Fyodor Dostoevsky was born on November 11, 1821.
