Satoru Hashimoto / 橋本悟
Assistant Professor
Satoru Hashimoto received his Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University in 2014. He is currently working on a dissertation-based book manuscript, which examines how modern literature in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan in the late-19th to the early-20th centuries was practiced within contexts of these countries’ interrelated cultural traditions. In 2014-15, he was Junior Fellow at the Society of Fellows at the University of Chicago. Prior to coming to the US, he earned a BA and MA in French literature and culture at the University of Tokyo. He has published articles in English, Japanese, and Chinese on topics including trans-East Asian comparative literature, comparative modern Chinese and Western aesthetics, world literature, and Korean, Japanese, and French surrealisms. While undertaking the first book project, he is currently conducting preliminary research for a second book entitled Stateless Time: A Transcultural History of Postwar East Asia, 1945-1953, which will examine the transcultural memories of colonialism and war in East Asia in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. He is associate editor for the Journal of World Literature
