Independent Bookstores Find Their Footing

Independent bookstores have weathered competitions from big chains, Amazon and now e-books — but this year's holiday shopping season looks like an improvement on past years, as booksellers offer quality hardcovers and their own take on e-readers with the Kobo.

In 1900, the ranking weekly journals of news and opinion were The Independent (1870), The Nation (1865), the Outlook (1870), and in a different class or with a different emphasis, The Literary Digest (1890).[2]
