作者是奇人，有傳記：Janet Byrne: A Genius for Living - A Biography of Frieda Lawrence, Bloomsbury, 1995.
上周在紐約時報讀篇他們在新墨西哥的農場報導，大開眼界。
這本書的幾乎不附外文，翻譯有些可能瑕疵。
譬如說
「生活和情感在不斷地變化。我們不是照片，『紀念碑上的耐心』」
注說它是莎士比亞{第十二夜}中一比喻，我查出：

學生參考書說法：“Patience on a monument” refers to statues of the allegorical figure of Patience, which often adorned Renaissance tombstones. By comparing her imaginary sister to this stone figure, Viola subtly contrasts her own passion with the self-indulgent and grandiose lovesickness from which Orsino claims to suffer.
換句話說，「紀念碑」和「墓碑」不同。

「此首詩詞作者及寫作時間已不詳，但最有根據的是於 1932年，在美國馬利蘭州巴爾的摩市，一位名為Mary Elizabeth Frye (1905-2004) 的主婦，為了同居友人Margaret chwarzkopf的母親過世而寫的作品 。
另一種說法是有位喪妻的印地安人，因想念亡妻極度傷心，計畫與兒子一起自殺追隨亡妻，正在安排後事，整理亡妻遺物時，發現亡妻生前所寫的一首詩。 」
