我現在抄Waley的翻譯和我的簡單筆記於【】之內，供大家參考。


「谷神不死，是謂玄牝。」（道經／六章）

【The Valley Spirit never dies,
It is named the Mysterious Female.】

「敦若朴，混若濁，曠若谷。」（道經／十五章）

【 這在另外一版本為
「……敦兮其若朴；曠兮其若谷；混兮其若濁；…….」

所以A. Waley的翻譯為：
Blank, as a piece of uncarved wood;
Yet receptive as a hollow in the hills.

按：HC在評述 朗契諾 （Ron Chernow）著 《洛克斐勒》（黃裕美，樂為良譯 台北:商周出版 2000）第三頁說：「睡空( Sleepy Hollow) 」是誤譯，『其實Hollow是指"小山谷" 』。】


「知其榮，守其辱，為天下谷．為天下谷，常得乃足，復歸於朴。」（道經／二十八章）

【He who knows glory, yet cleaves to ignominy
Becomes like a valley that receive into it all things under heaven,
And being such a valley
He has all the time a power that suffices;…】


「譬道在天下，猶川谷與江海。」（道經／三十二章）

【To Tao all under heaven will come
As streams and torrents flow into a great river or sea.
此處Waley或許認為『谷』為衍文……】

「昔之得一者：天得一以清，地得一以寧，神得一以靈，谷得一以盈，萬物得一以生，神無以靈，將恐歇；谷無以盈，將恐竭；萬物無以生，將恐滅；侯王無以貴高，將恐……」（德經／三十九章）

【As for the things that from of old have understood the Whole ---
The Sky through such understanding remains limpid,
Earth remains steady,
The spirits keep their holiness,
The abyss is replenished,
The ten thousand creatures bear their kind,
Barons and princes direct their people.】


「明道若昧，進道若退，夷道若類，上德若谷，大白若辱，」（德經／四十一章）

【"The way out into the light often looks dark,
The way that goes ahead often looks as if it went back."
The way that is least hilly often looks as if it went up and down,
The "power" that is really loftiest looks like an abyss.】

「江海所以能為百谷王，以其善下之，故能為百谷王。是以聖人欲上人，必以言下之；欲先人，必以身後之。」（德經／六十六章）

【How did the great rivers and seas get their kinship over the hundred lesser streams?
Through the merit of being lower than they : that is how they got their kingship.】
