Michael Useem: I became convinced that everybody needs a leader's checklist by virtue of watching leaders in action who didn't have it. They made -- call it "an unforced error," or sometimes a couple of unforced errors. Simply having a piece of paper that says, "Don't forget to honor the room," or "Don't forget to talk about a company strategy," would help people avoid these kinds of mistakes. It really goes back to Atul Gawande's great argument in The Checklist Manifesto. Most people in surgery and most pilots don't make errors. But when they do make an error, it has significant implications. A checklist helps prevent such a mistake. 這真的可以追溯到 阿圖爾 Atul Gawande(醫生)了不起的《查核清單宣言》(The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right)一書畫2009)中的論說。

1914

In April, Lewis met Arthur Greeves (1895-1966), of whom he said, in 1933, "After my brother, my oldest and most intimate friend."

1931
Lewis became a Christian: One evening in September, Lewis had a long talk on Christianity with J.R.R. Tolkien (a devout Roman Catholic) and Hugo Dyson. (The summary of that discussion is recounted for Arthur Greeves in They Stand Together.) That evening's discussion was important in bringing about the following day's event that Lewis recorded in Surprised by Joy: "When we [Warnie and Jack] set out [by motorcycle to the Whipsnade Zoo] I did not believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and when we reached the zoo I did."

Federico Fellini's masterpiece 8 1/2 (Otto e mezzo) shocked audiences around the world when it was released in 1963 by its sheer auteurist gall. The hero, a film director named Guido Anselmi, seemed to be Fellini's mirror image, and the story to reflect the making of 8 1/2 itself. Whether attacked for self-indulgence or extolled for self-consciousness, 8 1/2 became the paradigm of personal filmmaking, and numerous directors, including Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Bruce LaBruce, paid homage to it in their own work.
Now that 8 1/2's conceit is less shocking, D.A. Miller argues, we can see more clearly how tentative, even timid, Fellin's ground-breaking incarnation always was. Guido is a perfect blank, or is trying his best to seem one. By his own admission he doesn't even have an artistic or social statement to offer: 'I have nothing to say, but I want to say it anyway.' 8 1/2's deepest commitment is not to this man (who is never quite 'all there') or to his message (which is lacking entirely) but to its own flamboyant manner. The enduring timeliness of 8 1/2 lies, Miller suggests, in its aggressive shirking of the shame that falls on the man – and the artist – who fails his appointed social responsibilities.

"Blake single vision" refers to a philosophical concept by the poet and artist William Blake that describes the over-reliance on scientific, rational thought at the expense of imaginationIt characterizes a narrow perspective, exemplified by Isaac Newton, that sees reality as limited to measurable quantities, stifling creativity and the belief in spiritual or invisible dimensions. Blake advocated for "fourfold vision," which includes imagination to perceive the multi-dimensional nature of existence and connect with the divine.
Key Aspects of Single Vision:
  • Rationality over Imagination:
A focus on the scientific and logical side of the brain, leading to a view that only verifiable data is real.
  • Limited Perspective:
A belief that reality is flat, predictable, and confined to what can be measured and observed.
  • Association with Newton:
Newton's scientific method, while valuable, is seen by Blake as an embodiment of single vision, symbolizing the suppression of creative and spiritual understanding.
  • Separation of Life Spheres:
The idea that single vision allows for the autonomy of social, economic, and political spheres, but at the cost of preventing them from mingling in a deeper, more integrated way.
  • Fear of Death:
In this state, death is seen as a meaningless, blind end, an outcome to be feared and avoided.
Blake's Counterpoint: Fourfold Vision
  • Holistic Perception:
The ability to see beyond mere measurements and abstractions to perceive life in its full, multi-dimensional complexity.
  • Imagination:
The essential tool for achieving fourfold vision, allowing humans to connect the material world with the spiritual.
  • Connection to the Divine:
A state where humanity can connect with the divine, seeing spiritual truths within and beyond the material world.
  • Embracing Creation:
A state of active love and engagement with the world, rather than mere observation or rule-following.
