"That’s what they mean by the love that passeth understanding: that pride, that furious desire to hide that abject nakedness which we bring here with us, . . . carry stubbornly and furiously with us into the earth again."
--from As I Lay Dying, by William Faulkner
As I Lay Dying is Faulkner’s harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. Narrated in turn by each of the family members—including Addie herself—as well as others the novel ranges in mood, from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. Considered one of the most influential novels in American fiction in structure, style, and drama, As I Lay Dying is a true 20th-century classic. "A Rose for Emily" is a short story by William Faulkner, first published on April 30, 1930. Set in the fictional town of Jefferson, Mississippi, within Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, the story explores themes of tradition, isolation, and the passage of time through the life of its protagonist, Miss Emily Grierson.
The narrative unfolds in a non-linear fashion, revealing Emily's life and the town's perception of her through a series of flashbacks. Emily is depicted as a reclusive figure, a remnant of the old Southern aristocracy, whose family has fallen into decline after the Civil War. Her father’s overbearing control prevents her from marrying, and after his death, she struggles with loneliness and societal expectations.
As the story progresses, Emily becomes increasingly isolated, leading to her controversial relationship with Homer Barron, a Northern laborer. The townspeople gossip about their relationship, and when Homer disappears, Emily's actions become more mysterious. The story culminates in a shocking revelation about Emily's life choices and the lengths to which she goes to avoid abandonment and loneliness.
Faulkner's use of rich symbolism, particularly the rose, serves as a complex metaphor for love, loss, and the decay of the old South. The story is a poignant commentary on the struggle between tradition and change, as well as the impact of societal pressures on individual lives. Overall, "A Rose for Emily" remains a powerful exploration of the human psyche and the haunting effects of isolation and memory.

"The poets are wrong of course. … But then poets are almost always wrong about facts. That's because they are not really interested in facts: only in truth: which is why the truth they speak is so true that even those who hate poets by simple and natural instinct are exalted and terrified by it."
-- Gavin Stevens from "The Town" (1957)

Dear All,
今天突然驚覺「其實,我不懂 critical study 是什麼意思」。

 critical study 是「批判的研究(具批判精神的研究)」?
 還是:「精審的研究(對文獻、材料經過一番審核、考察後的研究)」?
例如這本書: William Faulkner: A Critical Study
 這樣的書名,代表作者對「威廉 福克納」作了怎樣的研究?
例如:
A Critical Study of the Public Space in Hong Kong

A Critical Study of the Public Space in Hong Kong 一文,則更簡單,它只是指香港公共空間被私人地產開發公司和政府蠶食鯨吞的診斷和開方。

A Critical Study of the Public Space in Hong Kong

The blatant increase of malls and the continuous decrease of public space in the city are both undeniable facts. Some people accuse the private property developers of privatizing the public space and some argue that Hong Kong Chinese do not have the tradition of spending time in public space at all. This essay aims at revealing the needs of public space by Hongkongers and how public space in the territory is eaten up by both private property developers and the government. These will then be followed by some suggestions on how the co-existence and the balanced development of the private and public space can be made possible in Hong Kong  http://www.ln.edu.hk/cultural/programmes/MCS/Symp%2013/S1P2.pdf

In this fourth edition of his celebrated study of Faulkner, Irving Howe analyzes all of the great author's works, emphasizing the themes that run throughout the novels and stories. "The scheme of my book is simple," Mr. Howe writes. "First, I have tried to say what Faulkner's work is about, ' to report on the social and moral themes in his books; and then I have tried to analyze and evaluate the more important novels." Anyone who has enjoyed the special flavor of Faulkner's writing will appreciate Mr. Howe's careful analysis, and the student of twentieth-century American literature will gain new perspective and insight. Mr.Howe successfully portrays the intimate connection between Faulkner's fiction and the emotional and psychic history of the South without slighting the universality that makes him one of America's greatest writers. "Mr. Howe is a shrewd critic, and he writes of Faulkner's achievements as a practicing novelist with a wary respect. He has a good many observations to make that should help readers in going through the novels. Alfred Kazin, New York Times
