Webb began his career as a freelance photographer in 1945 when he was 40. Shortly thereafter, he started compiling a journal that he still maintains. Here, this spirited octogenarian has paired portions of his journal entries with about 150 of his black-and-white photographs reflecting on a rich, adventurous life guided by a passion for photography. The splendid images of cityscapes, buildings, doorways, bridges, street scenes, ordinary and renowned persons, accompanied by the candid, folksy memoirs reveal a deeply sensitive artist. Reminiscences of warm friendships with Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Nancy Newhall, with accounts of extensive travels worldwide and across America for the United Nations, Standard Oil, and Fortune magazine make for compelling reading. Although not a familiar figure, Webb's works have been exhibited in major museums. A good choice for public libraries.
