第一是伊羅生（Harold R. Isaacs）的經典著作：《中國革命的悲劇》。伊羅生是二十年代到中國來推動共產革命的一個人，與第三國際有密切 的關係。「革命」失敗以後，他在上海住了很長的一段時期。通過共/產/黨內的劉仁靜，他收集了許多內部文件，特別是江西紅區的報告，他的書便完全建立在這些 文件之上。他指出，井崗山的「紅/軍」與農民之間根本格格不入，加入了「紅/軍」的農民不斷逃亡，而農村中人包括農民在內，不但不支持「紅軍」而且還把他們 當作「土匪」來攻擊。" 余英時

　　「第一次国内革命战争」、「国民革命军北伐」、「国共合作」、「大革命」、「蒋介石背叛革命」、「清党」、「南京国民政府」……这些词语和有关的历史 概略，稍有一点中国现代史知识的人都一定熟知。但是有多少人知道，他们从教科书学到的这部份历史（就是终于惨败的1925-27年中国革命的历史），其实 充满了非常大的谎话呢？
　　伊罗生所著的这部《中国革命的悲剧》是第一部有系统地揭露这段历史真相的书。这书的英文原本出版于1938年，后来经过不止一次修改，至今仍被世界学 术界认为是一部「经典」著作。但一直到不久之前为止，这书在中国境内被严禁阅读和流传。在这点上，国共两党政府是一致的。台湾方面，到了八十年代末开放政 治自由后，才容许这书公开传入。至于大陆方面，人们敢于公开介绍这书，是最近一两年的事情：大陆方面有这样的转变，主要的直接原因是不久之前俄国当局把大 批有关这段历史的共产国际和苏联共产党的秘密文件公开出来了，让这书的观点得到更确实的证明，尤其让大陆的学术界认识到了：传统所谓的「陈独秀右倾机会主 义」造成1927年的中国革命失败，其实是苏联和共产国际所制造的一大冤案。
　　读者可以从著者1971年为中文版所写的序言看到：由于著者的思想转变，现在所流传的英文本和中文以外的各种文字的译本都是对原本作了相当大的删改 的，只有这个中文译本是根据未经删改的原本，而英文原本根本流传很少。所以，这个中译本有它特殊的价值，比较能够代表几十年来饱受打压和恶意歪曲的托派观 点。
　　刘海生的这个中文译本最初是1950年在香港出版的。版权页上印着1947年在上海出版，那是在当时香港的政治环境下的一种伪装。不过，翻译工作和制版工作（除最后一章外），确实是先几年在上海做好了的。

Harold Robert Isaacs (1910–1986) was a historian and one-time Trotskyist historian of the Chinese Revolution of 1925-27. Isaacs went to China in 1930 and became involved with left wing politics in Shanghai. After World War II, he was a member of the department of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.^[1]

Isaacs, an author and professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died in Boston yesterday from complications resulting from heart surgery. He was 75 years old and lived in Newton, Mass. Mr. Isaacs, who went to China as a journalist in 1930,( 案:主編 中英文合刊的 中國論壇 (China Forum)) returned in World War II and again in 1980, wrote nine books, including several about China and Southeast Asia. Later in his career, in the academic world, he became fascinated with group identity and ethnicity, and in 1970's he wrote, ''Idols of the Tribe,'' a study of the effects of ethnicity on international politics.
