Hans Christian Andersen died 145 years ago today. The creator of the "little mermaid" actually let his heroine end up as sea foam, instead of a happy ending with her prince as many of us know from the Disney version. Many of the Danish storyteller's stories do not have happy endings, but even his darkest fairy tales have a very special magic.
“Each of the little princesses had her own little plot in the garden, where she could dig and plant whatever she liked. One gave her flower-bed the shape of a whale, another thought hers would looks better in the form of a little mermaid, but the youngest made hers quite round and would only have flowers that shone red like the sun.” – Hans Andersen, ‘The Little Mermaid’
Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of some of the world's best-loved fairy tales, died #OTD in 1875. He gained a reputation as a poet and novelist before his talent found its true expression. His humorous, delicate but frequently melancholic stories, were first published in 1835. They include “The Ugly Duckling”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Little Match Girl” and “The Emperor's New Clothes”.
Hans Christian Andersen died #otd in 1875 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
"Far, far from land, where the waters are as blue as the petals of the cornflower and as clear as glass, there, where no anchor can reach the bottom, live the mer-people. So deep is this part of the sea that you would have to pile many church towers on top of each other before one of them emerged above the surface."
