"Nagisa Hotel," an e-book from writer Shizuka Ijuin, takes an innovative multimedia approach through collaboration with musician Yosui Inoue and photographer Masaaki Miyazawa.
The book's central narrative is an autobiographical essay by Ijuin that takes its title from an actual hotel, demolished in 1989, where he used to live in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The e-book includes a theme song, "Twin Shadow," from an album released by Inoue in November 2010, and interview video footage in which Ijuin talks of his memories of his wife, the late actress Masako Natsume. It also contains photographs taken by Miyazawa of the hotel just before it was torn down.
"It's a union of words, music, photographs and video," says Ijuin. "I imagine that electronic books won't become popular unless they have a playful spirit."
The book, which can be read on the iPhone and iPad, is distributed by Digital Book Factory, a subsidiary of IT company M-Up. It retails for 1,000 yen ($12).
