Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin was born on 6 July [O.S. 24 June] 1854 – 10 January 1936 in Moscow, one of ten children[1] of Ivan Vassilievitch Shchukin, a self-made Moscow merchant, and his wife Ekaterina Shchukin, née Botkin, the daughter of an established family of merchants.[2] I.V. Shchukin and Sons Trading Company became one of the largest manufacturing and wholesale companies in Russia.[3]
