The Anatomy of Melancholy, Robert Burton1621 . Melencolia I, Albrecht Dürer 1514.

German painter, printmaker and theorist Albrecht Dürer was born on this day in 1471 in Nuremburg.
Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe very early on in his life due to his high-quality woodcut prints, and is credited with bringing the Renaissance to Northern Europe. He travelled to Italy a number of times, and was well-acquainted with many of the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. In 1512, he was appointed court painter to Roman Emperor Maximilian I.
Dürer's vast body of work also includes portraits and self-portraits, altarpieces and religious works, as well as copper engravings. We have a number of works by Dürer in our collection, which are available to view in a Western Art Print Room when the Museum is open.

The Anatomy of Melancholy, first published in 1621, is an extraordinary and enormous attempt to grapple with the causes, symptoms, and treatments of that universal human experience.

400 years later, when clinical depression is stated to be the leading cause of global disability, and there are many challenges to our mental health, a new radio series for BBC Radio 4 is asking: how far have we come? And is there anything we can learn from Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy to help us today?
