初讀 Nezami’s Seven Princesses






這篇『那扎米的七公主』（Nezami’s Seven Princesses--Haft Peykar，意為「七肖像」，或譯《七美人》(又名《七寶宮》，描寫薩珊王朝Bahram國王的事蹟。），是 Calvino 討論古伊朗Nezami（Nezami Ghanjavi，1141-1204，或譯「內札米」。他的主要作品除上述，包括著名的詩篇《五卷詩》（一組五部雙行詩體長詩）﹐即《秘密寶 庫》(1173～1180)﹑《霍斯陸和西琳》(1181)﹑《萊伊麗和馬季農》(1188)﹑和《亞歷山大故事》(1200)。）

本篇作者討論詩作Seven Princesses之「敘述結構」--這是他認為唯一可以置喙之領域。（又，參考本書他章「The Structure of Orlando Furioso」--翻譯討論詳後。 ）Calvino說，義大利文在『那扎米的七公主』的翻譯（兩本）、注解上得天獨厚，冠西歐諸語種。似乎還沒有漢文翻譯本--網路找到此篇寫道：“世界是 軀體，而伊朗是心臟。”

我一貫認為李桂蜜的翻譯不錯。不過，我對照讀的時候，會順手寫下一些筆記，當討論之參考。


將A prosperous rule and happy subjects翻譯成「國泰民安」似乎可以，不過「泰」是 peaceful，非繁榮。將Handmaid-brides 翻譯成「妻妾」，也似乎可 以，……。漏些文如Pious Sultan 掉Pious。將王子之initiation 翻譯成「啟蒙」似乎可以，不過它其實是類似從少年進入青年的成年禮（社會學名詞 rite of passage：根據小讀者提供的資料）。有一辭 guilded patina 翻譯成「鍍金光澤」，頗費我思量，因為 patina意思為"緑青"等。本章又碰到故事集（tales）之義大利文cunti，所以「在巴席勒的一個故事（cunti）」（p.59）的表示方式是矛盾的。 Polyvalent通常「多價的」，非「多價值的」（p.58）。

This universe of metaphors has characteristics and constants all of its own….in Nezani’s verses acquires the dignity of more noble, heraldic creatures, and appear almost on every page. In Prince Bahram’s hunts the onager is the most sought after and difficult quarry, often cited alongside the lion as the foe against which the hunter measures his strength and skill. When it comes to metaphors, the onager is an image of strength, and even virile sexual power, but also of amorous prey ( the onager pursued by the lion), of female beauty and of youth in general. And since the flesh is extremely tasty, we find “maidens with onagers’ eyes, roasting onager thighs on the fire’.

「隱喻的世界擁有自身的特徵和常數。…….它（野驢）卻具有高貴的紋章生物之威嚴，…….野驢是最搶手也是最難獵到的，而且幾乎跟獅子相提並論，都是獵人 用來測量自身力量和技巧的仇敵。涉及到隱喻時，野驢呈現的是力量的意象，甚至是雄性性能力，不過牠也代表愛情的獵物（野驢被獅子所追捕）、女性美以及一般 意義的青春。由於牠的肉極為美味，我們會發現「有著野驢眼睛的少女，在火上烤著野驢的大腿」。

Elsewhere the link is simply symbolic, based on the meaning attributed to each colour: yellow is the colour of the sun, therefore of the kings; so the yellow tale will tell of a king and will end in seduction, which is compared to the forcing of a casket which contains gold.(p.52)
